2. For freedom: the story of a French spy, by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley. 2003. M/H, Fiction: Historical, 181 p. * * * 6/13/2006

Despite the horrors of World War II, a French teenager pursues her dream of becoming an opera singer, which takes her to places where she gains information about what the Nazis are doing--information that the French Resistance needs.

This was a pretty interesting novel. I didn't like it so much at first, because it felt like the main plot took too long to get started. I did find myself captivated by what was going on in the story, though. Would you believe that this novel was based on interviews with Suzanne David, the French teenager who risked her life and who eventually married an American soldier and moved to the US?

Bradley definitely describes the horrors of war—violence, unease, suspense, traitors lurking among friends, mental and emotional distress, death, and so on. But the story of Suzanne David is certainly one that fans of historical fiction or World War II would appreciate.
